“O Blessed Little Town”: An Advent Poem

“O Blessed Little Town”
December 20, 2012

Bethlehem would be the place
Where Mercy took a human face
And set to rescue Adam’s race—
O blessed little town.

The Son of Man—at last descending
To the earth for those offending
God Most High with sin unending—
Would lay his own life down.

This Hope who came to reconcile
All men to God, Jew and Gentile,
And lead us out of sin’s exile,
Would in his own blood drown.

The flesh of Jesus veiled his worth
To those who saw his lowly birth,
But someday his return to earth
Shall show his true renown.

Behold the Victor o’er the Fall,
This babe inside a manger stall,
Born in this humble place for all—
O blessed little town.
